National Teams FIFA UNDER 20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP When Canada takes the field against Chile at BMO Stadium in Toronto in July of this year, it will be the eighth time that Canada has appeared in the finals of the FIFA U-20 World Championship. Canada first qualified in 1979 and produced an upset in the first game by beating Portugal in Kobe, Japan. Canada turned in another fine performance in 1987 in Chile, when Tony Taylor’s team tied with Italy and Nigeria before being narrowly beaten by Brazil. Ten Years later in Malaysia, Bruce Twamley’s squad were the first to reach the second round, while in 2003 Canada were eliminated in the second round by Spain. While in the run up to the 2007 tournament some of the world class stars who have played in the tournament have been mentioned, Canadian teams have also produced some very good players of their own. In 1979 for example Canada had Ian Bridge, Mike Sweeney, Gerry Gray and Branko Segota, all Hall of Famers. From the 1985 squad Alex Bunbury went on to greater things in Portugal. Two of Canada’s finest goalkeepers were in the 1987 squad in Craig Forrest and Pat Onstad, as also was the late Domenic Mobilio a prolific striker. The 1997 squad included Paul Stalteri, Dwayne de Rosario, Jason Bent and Richard Hastings, while in 2001 it was Julian de Guzman, Atiba Hutchinson and Iain Hume. Hume and Hutchinson were back in the team in 2003 and were joined by David Edgar and Josh Simpson. Two years ago Jaime Peters, Ryan Gyaki and David Edgar again made the squad. One member of the 1985 squad, Peter Sloly is now a Toronto police officer, while Nick de Santis of the 1987 team has gone on to become a highly successful coach of the Montreal Impact.
